How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session | Windsor, Colorado

Tips from a Windsor, Colorado Newborn Photographer

Preparing for your newborn photography session can make a big difference in how smoothly your photos go. As a Windsor, Colorado newborn photographer serving families throughout Northern Colorado, I’ve learned that the sleepier the baby, the easier and more relaxed the session feels. Those cozy, curled-up newborn portraits you love are most successful when both parents and photographer work together to help baby stay comfortable and sleepy.

There are two key aspects to getting those dreamy, sleepy newborn photos:

  • What parents do before the session
  • What I do during the session

Both matter. If only half of the equation is there, it just doesn’t work as well. So let’s talk about how we work together to get the sleepiest baby possible for your newborn photos.

Before Your Newborn Session: 5 Tips for Parents

Preparing your baby properly can make a huge difference in how your newborn photography session goes. Here are my top tips:

(Click on the triangles below for more information)

1. Keep Your Baby Awake for 1–2 Hours Before the Session

I know… this can feel impossible.

Here are some ideas; talking to them, a bath, changing clothes, tummy time, or simply keeping lights on and interacting with them.

A slightly overtired baby (not overly exhausted, just ready for sleep) will settle much more deeply once we begin.

2. Give Baby a Full Feeding Right Before the Session

A full tummy = a sleepy baby.

I always recommend planning to feed your baby right before the session begins (If you live close, feed before you leave). We want baby completely full before we start posing.

If baby needs to eat during the session, that’s completely normal too.

3. Bring a Pacifier (Even If You Don’t Normally Use One)

ession.

A pacifier can be incredibly helpful for:

  • Settling baby between poses
  • Soothing during transitions
  • Helping baby drift back into a deeper sleep

We often only use it for a few seconds at a time, but those few seconds can make all the difference.

4. Dress Baby in Loose Clothing

Please dress your newborn in:

  • Loose-fitting clothing
  • Something that does NOT need to go over their head
  • Zip-up pajamas are perfect

This helps avoid red marks on their skin and allows me to undress them gently without fully waking them.

The less we disturb baby, the better.

5. If You Breastfeed, Avoid Spicy Foods the Night Before

Some babies are more sensitive than others, but spicy foods (or foods that upset your baby’s tummy) can sometimes cause extra gassiness or discomfort.

A comfortable baby sleeps better. And a sleepy baby makes for those beautifully peaceful newborn photos.

During the Newborn Photography Session: What I Do

Parents often wonder, “How do you get babies so calm and curled up?” Here’s what’s happening on my end during your newborn photography session:

Gentle, Baby-Led Posing

I never force a pose.

If baby resists something, we move on. I follow your baby’s cues and adjust as needed. Every newborn is different, and my job is to work with your baby, not against them.

Warm Studio Environment

I keep my studio warm and cozy.

Babies are used to being snuggled up tight and warm. That comfort helps them stay asleep while posed.

White Noise & Calm Transitions

White noise is magic for newborns.

It helps keep baby in that deep, relaxed sleep state. I also move slowly and transition carefully between setups so we don’t startle them.

Patience (Lots of It)

Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours for a reason.

We allow time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Soothing
  • Extra snuggles
  • Diaper changes

There is no rushing a newborn session. The calm pace is part of what makes it successful.

Why Sleep Matters for Newborn Photos

Sleepy babies:

  • Curl more naturally
  • Stay relaxed in poses
  • Allow for smoother transitions
  • Look peaceful and content

If baby is wide awake, we can absolutely still capture beautiful images. However, those classic sleepy newborn portraits are much easier when we work together to prepare ahead of time.

Booking Your Newborn Photography Session in Windsor, Colorado

If you’re expecting and wondering how to prepare for newborn photos, I walk all of my families through this step-by-step before their session.

The best time for newborn photography is typically within the first 2–3 weeks after birth, when babies are naturally sleepier and curl up more easily.

If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Windsor, Fort Collins, Loveland, or Northern Colorado, I would love to help you plan a session that feels calm, beautiful, and completely stress-free.

Northern Colorado Newborn Photo Studio | Smallest CSU Fan

Welcome to the newborn studio sweet baby Mackinnon!

Fun Fact: Mackinnon was the last baby to be photographed in my Fort Collins photo studio. He did not disappoint! In fact, he was perfect.

Newborn and Family Photos

Mack and his family came into my Fort Collins studio recently for his newborn photos. I love the colors his family chose for their clothes. The navy and maroon photographed beautifully! He slept for most of his photos making my job so easy and enjoyable.

Newborn and Sibling Photos

Parents often worry about how older siblings are going to do for photo sessions. With 3 boys of my own, I know how important it is for big brothers to feel involved. I love photographing siblings and their new baby’s!

Newborn Portraits

Mackinnon is so sweet. I could have held him all day! I absolutely love photographing newborns. I love helping parents capture all the tiny details. The small things are hard to remember but a photograph can bring you right back to that moment in time.

I loved photographing Mack and his family.

Thanks for visiting the studio sweet boy!

Local Newborn Photo Shoot | Hello Little One

Welcome to the newborn photo studio baby Selasie!

Selasie recently came into my newborn photo studio for his newborn photos. He was absolutely amazing for me! From blanket poses to the family poses, he was relaxed and sleepy through it all.

Newborns Change So Fast

If you are a parent, then you already know, babies change so much in so little time. It is simultaneously amazing and hard to watch. You really only get to have a newborn for about 2 months. Photographing babies during this time means so much to me. I want parents to be able to look at their baby’s photos and remember what it felt like to hold that sweet little baby.

Newborn and Family Photos

I love photographing families with their new baby. There is just something special about creating the first family photos for parents. It never gets old. Seeing parents interact with their new baby is so sweet to watch. You should have seen how sweet and cooperative Selasie’s big brothers were for the photos. They made it so easy for me to get the cutest sibling photos.

Thanks for coming into the newborn studio Selasie! I had the best time taking your photos.

Fort Collins Newborn Photography | Triplet Newborn Photography

Welcome to the newborn photo studio Jaxson, Peyton and Naomi!

This sweet trio recently came into my newborn photo studio for their first photos. I had so much fun with them! Photographing 3 babies at one time is as tricky as you would imagine but it was so much fun!

Keeping Everyone Safe

Although I have photographed several sets of twins, this was my first time photographing triplets. The most important part of every newborn session is keeping the baby safe. When you have 3 newborns at one time, you need to use an extra level of caution. I knew I would need an extra set of hands(or two). Two of my amazing friends came to help! Bri and Jessica, I couldn’t have done it without you! I feel like I should add, several other people volunteered to come also. I had to keep it to only two helpers because my old Fort Collins photos studio was a little on the small side.

Newborn and Family Photos

One of my favorite parts of every newborn session is the family photos. There is just something special about creating the first family photos for parents. It never gets old. Seeing parents interact with their new baby (or in this case babies) is so sweet to watch. It was fun to see both parents could hold all three babies at once.

Thanks for coming into the newborn studio Jaxson, Peyton and Naomi! I truly had so much fun.

Local Newborn Photography | Cutest Little Keeper

Welcome to the newborn photo studio baby Judah!

Judah recently came into my Fort Collins photo studio for his newborn photos. His parents had so many great ideas for his photos. We of course had to do a Harry Potter set up for Judah. His parents are big fans. His nursery and baby book are both Harry Potter themed. Judah’s mom told me, she stood on the stack of Harry Potter books for a maternity photo! So much fun.

Newborn Client Closet

At the beginning of every newborn session, I have the parents pick out an outfit, wraps and backgrounds that they want to use. Letting the parents pick what we use allows for endless possibilities and color combinations. If I was the one picking, everything would look the same every photo session. How boring would that be?

The Rainbow After The Storm

I’ve sat here for the last 30 minutes trying to figure out what to write here. Two of my boys are rainbow babies, so I know how heartbreaking the storm really is. The other side of that is, I know how incredibly special it is to finally hold your rainbow baby.

Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,

Judy Garland – Wizard of oz

Thanks for coming into the newborn studio Judah. I truly enjoyed photographing you and all your amazing hair!

How Often Should I Get Professional Photos of My Baby?

How often should you get professional photos of your baby done? That fully depends on you. I’m going to list the most popular frequencies and ages of baby photo sessions so you can decide for yourself.

ONE AND DONE. One photo session during your baby’s first year is a favorite for many. Many people save up a long time to have professional photos done. They put their whole budget into one photo session. Most people who only do one photo session during their baby’s first year choose between a newborn session or a 1st birthday session.

TWO FOR YOU? Most people who choose to do two photo sessions during their baby’s first year usually do newborn and a 1st birthday session. This is a fun way to catch the beginning and the end of their first year. It’s amazing to see all the ways they have change in a year.

THREE FOR ME. Three photo sessions in the first year is my favorite! Newborn, sitter and 1st birthday is the perfect combination to fully see all the changes at every major milestone.

FOUR OR MORE. If you don’t want to miss a moment this choice might be for you. I photographed my youngest every month when he was a baby. Knowing he was my last was really hard for me. Those photos mean so much to me!

1 Month
2 Months
3 Months
4 Months
5 Months

To Be Continued… See you next month sweet girl!

6 Months

What do you think? How often would you like to get your baby photographed?

Northern Colorado Newborn Photography | You Have My Whole Heart

Welcome to the newborn photo studio sweet Mila!

Newborn Photos at Local Studio

Mila recently visited me at my Fort Collins newborn photo studio. She is just so adorable! She slept for most of her session thanks to her parents keeping her awake on the car ride to the studio. This can be incredibly hard especially if you have a bit of a drive to get to the studio. I’m always so impressed with parents that have a bit of a drive and still manage to keep their baby awake.

Having my newborn photo studio located in Fort Collins is great. It is central to many towns in Northern Colorado. Milliken, Wellington, Firestone, Greeley, Eaton, Johnstown, Denver, Loveland and even Cheyenne; a lot my families come from other towns to get photos of their babies done, just like Mila.

Newborn Photos for “Older” Babies

Mila was born a few weeks before Christmas. Her family was able to snuggle her and enjoy her all through the holidays. When she came in for her photos, she was about 6 weeks new. Typically, the older the baby gets the less they sleep for newborn photos. Mila was an exception to this rule. She slept beautifully and did absolutely amazing.

Leading up to having your baby there is so much to think about and organize. Sometimes things like newborn photos can slip our mind or maybe it’s not even on our radar. I don’t limit the age of my “newborns” to under 1 month for their photos. I believe every baby deserves beautiful photos no matter their age. If I limited the age of my newborns, I wouldn’t have met Mila and her wonderful family.

Baby and Family Photos

I love getting to photograph families and their new babies. Mila is so lucky; she has wonderful grandma and three big brothers to help look after her. They clearly love her so much already!

I love helping parents capture all the tiny details. The small things are hard to remember but a photograph can bring you right back to that moment in time.

It was so much fun to photograph Mila and her family.

Thanks for coming into the studio and brightening my day sweet Mila!

Fort Collins Baby Photography | Silent Nights? Holiday Edition

Welcome to the photo studio Dane!

Dane recently brightened up my day by visiting me at my Fort Collins photo studio. It was time for his 3-month photos. He is so adorably cute with his pink cheeks and cute Santa hat. Silent nights have been traded for this little cutie at his house. Well worth it, I’m sure!

3 Month Photos

3-month milestone photos are so sweet and unique. Every photo is different because their little personalities are really starting to shine through. Babies change so fast, it’s important to document all of the little changes. Photos help us remember the details.

Baby and Family Photos

I love getting to photograph baby’s and their parents. The smiles, the cuddles and all the adoration for this new person, is what makes capturing family portraits so incredible. Dane saved all of his smiles for his parents! It didn’t matter what I tried, he only wanted to smile for them. Luckily, his sweet parents new just what to do to make him smile.

It was so much fun to photograph Dane.

I hope you have a great 1st Christmas little one!
